Ben Affleck had no idea who Gossip Girl star Blake Lively was when she auditioned for his latest movie – and he was so stunned by her talent he hired her on the spot.

The actor/director was unaware of Lively’s fame when she tried out for a role in The Town, and was convinced she would be no good in front of the cameras.

But he was so impressed with the 22 year old’s performance he handed her the role immediately – and re-wrote the part of single-mum Krista to make it more suitable for a younger actress.

Affleck tells Esquire magazine, “The whole movie kind of hinges in a lot of ways on her performance, and I knew it was going to be the hardest part to cast. This girl came in, and no one had said to me beforehand, ‘Hey, look for this person.’ And obviously she was really attractive, and so I thought, ‘Oh, here comes some blonde girl.’ She came in, did one reading, and just crushed it. I was sort of stunned. I said, ‘Jeez, you know, that was really f**king good. Who are you?’ She didn’t mention that she was on a television show.

“I just said, ‘Look, there’s no alternative. I don’t have a second choice (in casting this role).’”

And Affleck is convinced Lively has a big future in Hollywood.

He adds, “I want to be on the record because I think she’s really going to blow up, and I want to look like the smart guy. I didn’t quite discover her, but at least I want to say I bought the stock when it wasn’t $500 a share.”

That Penn Badgley is one lucky guy!

The 22-year-old actress talks to the mag about how easy it is to snap into her Gossip Girl character: “I can snap into Serena very easily. The way I dress as Serena is pretty much the way I dress as me. I’m living in New York City, shooting in New York City. I’m in a comfort zone.”

As for her experience filming the upcoming drama The Town with directed by Ben Affleck: “It was crazy.”

As for her sex scene with Ben, Blake shares, “I have a sex scene in this film and that’s never comfortable. You think, ‘Oh, this is going to be so awkward.’ But this scene isn’t supposed to be a steamy one — it’s sort of tragic. … I’m pretty much crying in it.”

Blake Lively has landed the female lead role in “Green Lantern” as Carol Ferris opposite Ryan Reynolds in Warner Bros.’ live-action film based on the DC Comics hero.

Martin Campbell will direct. Production is expected to begin in March with a release date set for June 17, 2011.

Greg Berlanti wrote the script with Marc Guggenheim and Michael Green. Michael Goldenberg’s rewriting.

Donald DeLine’s producing with Berlanti. DeLine VP Andrew Haas is exec producing.

“Green Lantern” was hatched in 1940. Hal Jordan, a second-generation test pilot, is an ordinary man who has been charged with defending a sector of the universe with a mystical green ring. His love interest Carol Ferris is a pilot and administrator in civilian life.

The studio and Campbell tapped Reynolds for title role in July, following his performances in “The Proposal” and as Deadpool in “X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” a performance that prompted Fox to begin development on a spinoff film.

Lively’s currently seen on “Gossip Girl” and in indie drama “The Private Lives of Pippa Lee.” She’s in Warners’ upcoming crime drama “The Town” opposite Ben Affleck. Credits include “Accepted” and the “Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants” titles.

Campbell directed the Mel Gibson-starrer “Edge of Darkness,” based on the 1985 BBC miniseries that Campbell helmed. Warners is releasing “Edge of Darkness” Jan. 29.

Welcome back to Blake Lively Fan. We’ve revamped the whole site – a new layout, new content throughout, and the gallery? Well we basically tore it apart and started from fresh. You’ll now find over 42,000 images in the gallery including screencaps of all of the “Gossip Girl” episodes, as well as photos from the majority of her filmography. We’re working to add in the others as we are able to.

Parts of the site are still under construction but we wanted to get this fansite back online as soon as possible. The video archive? We’ll be launching it with many videos as soon as we can get the script installed and customized.
